NRC ISSUES SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT WITH OPEN ITEMS FOR SEABROOK NUCLEAR PLANT LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued its Safety Evaluation Report (SER) with Open Items for the proposed renewal of the operating license for Seabrook Station, Unit 1, nuclear power plant in Seabrook, N.H.

NextEra Energy Seabrook LLC, submitted an application to the NRC on June 1, 2010, to extend Seabrooks license by 20 years. The current 40-year license expires March 15, 2030.

The SER documents the NRC staffs review to date of the license renewal application and the site audit of Seabrooks aging management programs to address the safety of plant operations during the period of extended operations. The SER identifies open items that still must be addressed by the applicant before the staff can complete its review. The open items in this SER involve consideration of operating experience and development of pressure temperature limits, alkali-silica reaction in safety-related structures, and aging-management programs for certain safety-related components.

After NextEra provides satisfactory information to address the open items, the NRC staff will publish its final conclusions of its technical review of the license renewal application in an update to the SER.

Information about the Seabrook license renewal review, including the application and the SER with Open Items, as well as information about the license renewal process, is available on the NRC website.
