NRC SCHEDULES PUBLIC MEETING FOR AUG. 24 TO DISCUSS WATTS BAR UNIT 2 CONSTRUCTION PROJECT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, Aug. 24, to discuss the status of construction at the Watts Bar nuclear plants second unit.
The plant is located near Spring City, Tenn., about 60 miles southwest of Knoxville. The NRC extended the construction permit for Watts Bar Unit 2 in 2008. TVA had suspended construction of the unit in 1985, but decided in August 2007 to complete the project. TVA recently announced its intention to complete construction in 2013.
TVA has been operating Unit 1 at the site since 1996.
The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. EDT with a presentation by TVA on the Unit 2 construction schedules and other areas of interaction with the NRC. In addition, the NRC will make a presentation on issues ranging from licensing activities to construction inspection. After the business portion of the meeting, the NRC staff will be available to answer questions from members of the public. The meeting will be at the Magnuson Hotel, 1421 Murrays Chapel Road in Sweetwater, Tenn.
