  1. 7007-0220-0004-6736-0321 Enclosed is a National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Marine Mammal and Marine Turtle Stranding Report for a live elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) discovered in a recess between adjacent concrete tri-bars on the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP)

Intake Cove Breakwater. The elephant seal was discovered the afternoon of June 27, 2008, and appeared unable to move from the location on its own.

Personnel from the Marine Mammal Center successfully assisted the juvenile elephant seal back into the waters of the Intake Cove later that afternoon (June 2 7th) where it was free to exit to the Pacific Ocean. The elephant seal had an orange identification tag on the left rear flipper numbered.20072. Upon assist and release, the animal appeared unharmed with the exception of a few minor scrapes observed on the head.

Verbal notification of this incident was reported to NMFS on June 27, 2008, the day of discovery and release.

REMARKS: This was.

Juvenile Elephant Seal apparently unable to move itself from a recessed location on a breakwater. The Marine Maimmal Center (MMC) was requested to investigate and assist the animal as necessary.

  • Direct observation and all handling was performed by MMC personnel. Age and sex assessment (Juvenile Male) and length/weight estimates were completed by MMC personnel and provided to the listed examiner.
