dated March 29, 2001 In the referenced letter we requested relief from Inservice Testing (IST) program requirements for the two Essential Service Water (SX) Makeup Pumps. In this letter we proposed an alternate "Alert Range" vibration limit for the SX Makeup Pumps gearbox measurement. We concluded that the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Boiler and Pressure Vessel (B&PV) Code requirements for pump vibration limits that prompt increased monitoring (i.e., the Alert Range) are not applicable to the unique design configuration of these pumps and their prime movers as the pump's thrust bearing is located in a right angle gearbox located approximately 39 feet above the pump.

During the NRC's review of this submittal, a question arose as to whether spectral analysis of the SX Makeup Pump vibration data is performed. As discussed in a December 31, 2001, telephone conversation between G. F. Dick (NRC) and J. A. Bauer (Exelon Generation Company, LLC), the Byron Station Vibration Analyst reviews ASME IST vibration data for all ASME-related pumps. This review includes spectral analysis of the vibration data. Any concern found on an ASME pump is documented in the Byron Station corrective action program. In addition, pump vibration concerns are addressed by more comprehensive special testing and corrective maintenance is performed as appropriate.
