LOSS OF A WELL LOGGING SOURCE I

The licensee informed IE-III (Chicago) on April 18, 1977, by telephone, of I the loss of a nominal 2 millicurie cobalt-60 sealed source during a I well logging operation near Bloomfield, Missouri. The source is located 117 feet below ground and all recovery efforts have been ineffective.

The licensee raid he planned to permanently cement the source in place and post an appropriate sign at ground level above the source.

On May 9, 1977 the licensee informed IE-III that the owner of the land wants the source removed and doesn't want any signs on his property which state that radioactive material is buried. The licensee is currently negotiating with the owner of the land in an attempt to resolve the matter.

The licensee also stated a 30-minute TV special relating to the buried 2 mil 11 curie cobalt-60 sealed source was presented by a local station.

The State of Missouri was informed of the event.

IE-III informed IE-IV of this event on April 18, 1977 and again on May 10, 1977.

IE-III plans no news release at this time.
