Gentlemen:
Subject: Inspection No. 50-293/85-27
A special radiological safety inspection was conducted by Mr. R. L. Nimitz of
this office on September 16-20, 1985, at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station,
Plymouth, Massachusetts. The inspection findings were discussed with
Mr. C. J. Mathis.
The inspection covered your post accident sampling, monitoring and analysis
capabilities.
No violations were observed. However, one deviation from information provided
to us in your May 18, 1982 letter was identified. The deviation involves the
lack of protective conduit for the detector cables of the High Range Contain-
ment Monitoring System. Your letter stated that this conduit was installed.
Our review found that the conduit was not installed. Please respond to this
matter in accordance with the enclosed Appendix A.
In addition, certain activities were identified which require improvement to
be acceptable relative to NUREG-0737. You are requested to review the items
identified in the attached report and respond within 60 days of the date of
this letter on actions planned or taken in regard to these items.
The responses directed by this letter are not subject to the clearance pro-

cedures of the Office of Management and Budget as required by the Paperwork
Reduction Act of 1980, PL 96-511. Your cooperation with us in this matter is
appreciated.
