Both trespassers observed to be carrying equipment to conduct manual digging for fish bait. Local law enforcement was called and responded to the Maine Yankee site. Law enforcement officers from Wiscasset Police and Lincoln County Sheriffs Department contacted both individuals and advised they had trespassed onto Maine Yankee property. Both trespassers apologized for their actions and were fully compliant with the officers. They were both advised and agreed to remain off Maine Yankee Property in the future. Their conduct was not deemed suspicious. | |
| ENS 56468 | 13 April 2023 23:05:00 | 10 CFR 50.72(b)(2)(xi), Notification to Government Agency or News Release | Offsite Notification for Sewage Discharge | The following information was provided by the licensee via phone and email: At 1905 (EDT), a security force member discovered what appeared to be a sewage leak along the gravel roadway northwest of the gatehouse entrance. The affected area was approximately 12' X 15'. The water was slowly bubbling up from the ground about 20' along one of our access roads. Large absorbent spill containment barriers were placed at the scene to minimize the incident. Water usage was stopped within our facility, and sewer pumps isolated. The Maine State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was notified of the incident (DEP spill # 23-0004705). The area was inspected at approximately 2130 (EDT), and water discharge was no longer observed. Maine Yankee site management is currently in the process of contacting contractors to resolve the issue. The site is safe and secure. The concrete cask heat removal system is operable, and the temperature monitoring system is functional. The following additional information was obtained from the licensee in accordance with Headquarters Operations Officers Report Guidance: The licensee notified Region 1 personnel. | |

| ENS 41101 | 7 October 2004 18:00:00 | 10 CFR 50.72(b)(2)(xi), Notification to Government Agency or News Release | Offsite Notification Due to an Unscheduled Release | The licensee provided the following information via facsimile: (The) Maine Emergency Management Agency (was notified) of an unscheduled release that occurred during the 24 hour period ending at midnight on Thursday, 10/07/04. Maine Yankee identified a minor release of 3.18 E-6 Curies of liquid from the site. This release exceeded the value projected for this period and is therefore classified as unscheduled. The total liquid release resulted in a minor exposure value of 2.21 E-5 millirem. The cause of the release resulted from groundwater intrusion of the outfall piping during soil remediation and failure of the clay barrier that was installed. (The) release occurred from 9/30/04 until 10/6/04. The outfall piping is being removed and the area backfilled to eliminate liquid releases via this pathway. The licensee stated that the radionuclides involved were Cesium-137, Bismuth-214, and Lead-214. The licensee has notified the NRC Region 1 (Roberts). | |
| ENS 40709 | 27 April 2004 21:14:00 | 10 CFR 50.72(b)(3)(xiii), Loss of Emergency Preparedness | Loss of Communication Capability Through Ens Line | The licensee was notified by the phone communications provider of a loss of all communications that affected the licensee's Emergency Notification System (ENS) line. The licensee has provided the NRC Operations Center with a back up cell phone. The ENS capability is expected to be restored by 23:00 tonight and after restoration of the phone lines, the licensee will verify ENS functionality. It is believed that the loss of communications was due to maintenance work being performed by the provider on the fiber optics lines. The NRC Resident Inspector was notified by the licensee via voice mail phone message.
The ENS line has been restored at 19:33 on 04/27/04. Communications with the US NRC Operations Center was tested satisfactorily. The NRC Resident Inspector will be notified by the licensee via voice mail phone message. Notified the R1DO (Barkley). | |
