Victor Dricks (817) 860-8128 E-Mail: opa4@nrc.gov Lara Uselding (817) 276-6519 NRC TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE TO DISCUSS 2009 PERFORMANCE OF CALLAWAY NUCLEAR PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold an open house in Fulton, Mo., on May 27, with representatives of AmerenUE, to discuss the agency=s 2009 assessment of safety performance for the Callaway nuclear power plant.

The open house will begin at 5 p.m. at the Burton Business Building, Classroom 6, William Woods University, One University Ave., in Fulton.

At the open house, members of the public will have an opportunity to meet informally with the NRC staff, ask questions and learn about the agencys role in ensuring safe plant operation.

AThe NRC continually reviews the performance of Callaway and the nation=s other commercial nuclear power facilities,@ NRC Region IV Administrator Elmo E. Collins said. AThis informal meeting will provide members of the public with an opportunity to learn about our annual assessment of safety performance at the plant.@

The NRC said Callaway operated safely during 2009 and will receive the detailed inspection regime during 2010 used by the NRC for plants that are operating well. Inspections are performed by two NRC Resident Inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the Region IV Office in Arlington, Texas.

A letter sent from the NRC Region IV office to plant officials addresses the performance of the plant during 2009. It is available on the NRC web site at:
