.This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE cafety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received ~without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff in Atlanta, Georgia on this date.

EXTENDED SHUTDOWN FOR PRIMARY-TO-SECONDARY TUBE LEAKAGE Due to the steady increases detected in Steam Generator (SG) 2A primary to secondary tube leakage over the last week, McGuire Unit 2 has been scheduled to be shutdown by early morning June 14, 1997, in order to effect necessary repairs. This forced outage, which is expected to last approximately two weeks, has come about three months before the Unit 2  ;

refueling /SG replacement outage currently scheduled for September 1997.  !

The most recent SG 2A primary to secondary tube leakage of approximately l 54 Gallons Per Day (GPD) is below the Technical Specification and licensee's Administrative limits of 500 GPD per SG and 100 GPD per SG, j tespectively.

i i The NRC resident inspectors will followup on the Unit 2 shutdown and

, associated recovery activities.

The state of North Carolina has been notified. The licensee is prepared to respond to any media inquiries, but no press release is planned.
