SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 HOURS - UPDATE

-. Virginia Power has repaired an incore thermocouple electrical connection seal, the suspected path for unidentified reactor coolant system leakage which exceeded the technical specification limit and which was the cause for shutdown of North Anna Unit 1 on December 29(PN9-II-85-122).

Virginia Power, having now determined tFat the leakage is coming from the reactor pressure vessel head seals, is taking steps to remove the pr;ssure vessel head. As a result, it is estimated that the unit will be out of service for another 16 days.

Virginia Power is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
