McGuire Unit 2 Notification of Unusual Event Docket No. 50-370 Alert Cornelius, North Carolina Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN LONGER THAN 48 HOURS Duke Power Company shut down McGuire Unit 2 yesterday to repair a steam generator tube leak and to correct a low oil level in one of the unit's reactor coolant pumps.

Duke had planned to take the unit out of service on December 15 to correct the steam generator leak, but advanced the shutdown time after the low oil level indication on the reactor coolant pump was received. At the time of the shutdown, the steam generator leak had reached 250 gallons a day, which is half the technical specification limit.

Restart of the unit is scheduled for December 26. McGuire Unit 1 is operating at 100 percent power.

Duke will announce this outage on its weekly plant status report which is made available to the media.

The State of North Carolina has been informed.

This information is current as of 11 a.m. (EST) today.
