!- transfer to Lockheed Martin Energy Systems located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, it was determined that four of the slugs were missing. The l material has been in storage since approximately 1985. Each slug '

contains approximately 1.8 kilograms of natural uranium. The licensee performed a visual search of its facility and a radiation survey but was una)le to locate the missing slugs. The licensee originally received 2.493.1 kilograms of natural uranium in 1,381 aluminum-clad slugs in i 1963. The natural uranium was in a Student Training Reactor, a light

.' water moderated subcritical assembly (Nuclear Chicago Assembly Model

' 9003), located in Room P-9 of the Pope Academic Building. All of the nat;ral uraniLa slugs with the exception of one " demonstration" slug were mailtained at all times in aluminum tubes mounted in the subcritical assembly. The licensee cannot state with any certainty at what point in L time the slugs initially became missing. Region I will perform a l rea:tive inspection at the licensee's facility to review this matter.
