CONTAMINATION OF WORKERS WITH SHORT-LIVED RUBIDIUM-88 AND CESIUM-138 About 11:00 a.m. January 17, nine plant workers were slightly contaminated with short-lived rubidium-88 and cesium-138 due to buildup of gases in the offgas building after

  • the of fgas system was shut down for maintenance. Also, a very slight amount of radio-activity was detected at the offgas building ventilation exhaust, even though the ventilation had been secured. All personnel have been decontaminated.

This event is somewhat similar to one that occurred on December 11, 1985. The NRC rosident inspectors will follow up on this event and continue to follow ongoing licensee evaluations of the offgas and ventilation systems from the previous event. NRC Region I was notified of this event by the licensee about 1:45 p.m. The State of New Jersey has been notified. The licensee has notified State and local authorities. Region I

! will respond to media inquiries. In the past, there has been heavy local public and media interest in any plant event involving contamination or radioactive releases.
