AMERICAN BOARD OF RADIOLOGY, COMPLETION OF THE REVIEW FOR CONTINUED RECOGNITION BY THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION
Dear Dr. Brent Wagner:
Thank you for responding to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRC) letter dated March 15, 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access Management System (ADAMS)1 Accession No. ML22068A133), which requested confirmation that the American Board of Radiology (ABR) continues to satisfy the NRC recognition criteria for specialty board certification processes in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 352, Medical Use of Byproduct Material. The NRC staff reviewed your response letter dated April 21, 2022, and the certificates submitted on May 27, 2022 (ML22112A120).
The NRC staff performed a review of each NRC-recognized specialty board per the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS) Office Procedure MSST-70-3, Procedures for Recognizing, Monitoring, and Terminating the Certification Process of Specialty Boards, Section 3.11, Monitoring Continued Satisfaction of Recognition Requirements (ML20351A389). As part of the review, the NRC staff evaluated the ABRs publicly available website at https://www.theabr.org/, as well as any provided documentation for changes that could affect the recognition of the boards certification processes. Based on your response letter and the NRCs subsequent review, the NRC staff determined that the certification processes for the following specialty areas continue to satisfy the board recognition criteria:
The Diagnostic Medical Physics specialty area continues to satisfy the board recognition criteria in 10 CFR 35.50, "Training for Radiation Safety Officer and Associate Radiation Safety Officer."
The Nuclear Medical Physics specialty area continues to satisfy the board recognition criteria in 10 CFR 35.50, "Training for Radiation Safety Officer and Associate Radiation Safety Officer."

B. Wagner The Therapeutic Medical Physics specialty area continues to satisfy the board recognition criteria in 10 CFR 35.51, "Training for an authorized medical physicist."
The Interventional Radiology / Diagnostic Radiology specialty area continues to satisfy the board recognition criteria in 10 CFR 35.290, "Training for imaging and localization studies" and 10 CFR 35.394, "Training for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities greater than 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries)."
The Radiation Oncology specialty area continues to satisfy the board recognition criteria in 10 CFR 35.390, "Training for use of unsealed byproduct material for which a written directive is required," 10 CFR 35.490, "Training for use of manual brachytherapy sources," and 10 CFR 35.690, "Training for use of remote afterloader units, teletherapy units, and gamma stereotactic radiosurgery units."
The Diagnostic Radiology specialty area continues to satisfy the board recognition criteria in 10 CFR 35.290, "Training for imaging and localization studies" and 10 CFR 35.392, "Training for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities less than or equal to 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries)."
In addition, thank you for providing the new certificates for ABR Diagnostic Medical Physics, ABR Nuclear Medical Physics, and ABR Therapeutic Medical Physics with the following effective dates: 1) May 1, 2011, to April 30, 2012, 2) May 1, 2012, to April 30, 2013, 3) May 1, 2013, to April 30, 2019, and 4) May 1, 2019, to present. The certificates were marked with candidate degrees; MS, PSM, and PhD for all three medical physics disciplines. The NRC staff added the certificates to the NRC public website titled Specialty Board(s) Certification Recognized by NRC Under 10 CFR Part 35, available at https://www.nrc.gov/materials/miau/med-use-toolkit/spec-board-cert.html. The NRC public website is used by NRC license reviewers, as well as license reviewers in Agreement States, to verify that the certificates submitted by licensees are valid. Please ensure that ABR shares any future changes to certificates with the NRC with the date that the revised certificates became or will become effective.
In 2019, the NRC revised its medical use regulations, including training and experience requirements. A history of the rulemaking, pertinent guidance document references, and a summary of major changes are available in a 2018 presentation titled Final Rule - Medical Use Regulations in 10 CFR 30, 32, and 35 (ML19085A550).3 The NRC staff have determined that ABR is in compliance, but we encourage you to review these changes if you have not done so already.
This letter further confirms that as the Executive Director of the ABR, you are the designee for all official correspondence with the NRC. If this changes in the future, please contact the NRC with the individual responsible for this role.
Please notify the NRC, via letter, if the board changes the boards name, certification processes, or certification documents because these changes could affect the recognition of certification process under the NRC requirements.
