STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFIF G ON THE STATUS OF SEQUOYAH 1, 2:00 P.M, THURSpAY, AUGUST 4, 1988, COMMISSIONERS' CONFEENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by executives of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the staff on the status of the Sequoyah Unit 1 Nuclear Power Plant.

Representing TVA were:

- S.A. White, Senior Vice President Nuclear Group, TVA

- J.R. Bynum, Vice President Power Production, TVA

- S. Smith, Plant Manager Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant, TVA Chairman Zech encouraged TVA to continue efforts to improve the attitude of its personnel and to maintain strong management involvement in the day to day operation of its nuclear programs. In addition, Chairman Zech cautioned the licensee not to be over confident during restart of Sequoyah Unit 1.

Mr. White was requested to inform the Commission of any difficulties in obtaining resources from the Board of Directors '

for the nuclear program.

At the request of Commissioner Rogers, Mr. White committed to provide the Co"mission a list of maintenance work items scheduled for che next Sequoyah Unit 2 planned outage.

Chairman Zech requested the staff to be mindful that the licensee takes a cautious and prudent approach to all activities in restarting and operating Unit 1.

The commission requested the staff, when ready, to submit final recommendations on the restart of Sequoyah Unit 1. Barring any-unforeseen problems, the Commission believes it will not be necessary for the licensee to meet with the Commission prior to the restart of sequoyah Unit 1.
