Mr. E. E. Van Brunt, Jr.

Vice President - Construction Projects Arizona Public Service Company P. O. Box 21666 '

Dear Mr. Van Brunt:

SUBJECT:

NUCLEAR POWER RELIABILITY DATA SYSTEM (NPRDS)

Your letter dated September 25, 1978, requested the current NRC position and plans regarding utility participation in the Nuclear Power Reliability Data System (NPRDS).

The NRC supports NPRDS and encourages utility participation in the program. However, utility participation is not mandatory and there are no immediate plans to make it so. If, in the future, mandatory participation in NPRDS is deemed appropriate, we anticipate that formal rulemaking procedures would be utilized.

We trust this information is responsive to your request.
