Letter WO 96-0058, dated April 5, 1996, from O. L. Maynard,

WCNOC, to USNRC, " Response to NRC Bulletin 96-01, ' Control Rod Insertion Problems'"

Subject:

Docket No. 50-482: Control Rod Drop Test Data Gentlemen:

NRC Bulletin 96-01, " Control Rod Insertion Problems," requested licensees to measure and evaluate, at each outage of sufficient duration during calendar 1 year 1996, the control rod drop times and rod recoil data for all control rods. In the Reference WCNOC committed to testing control rods in fuel assembly locations having burnups greater than 25,000 MWD /MTU.

Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation did perform rod drop testing on May 21, 1997, during a forced outage, on all rodded assemblies with burnup near or

greater than 25,000 MWD /MTU. All rods exhibited recoil and none of the rod drop traces indicated any signs of excessive drag. Rod drop times and associated assembly burnup data for the tested rodded assemblies are provided in the attachment.
