Subject:

Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station Units 1 and 2 Status of Diagnostic Evaluation Team (DET)

Materiel Condition Improvements Docket Nos. 50-254 and 50-265

Reference:

(a) J. O' Conner to J. Taylor letter concerning DET Response dated December 30,1993 (b) E. S. Krafl, Jr. to USNRC letter (ESK-96-197) concerning Status of DET Improvements dated October 30,1996 In reference (b), I stated that Quad Cities Station would complete the replacement of the signal cables (triple shielded cables) for the Unit 2 Source Range Monitors (SRMs) and Intermediate Range Monitors (IRMs) during Q2R14. Prior to the outage, a management review determined that other priority work needed to be accomplished in the vicinity of this cable replacement. This work included the permanent repair to eliminate the l furmanite clamp on the 2A Reactor Recirculation Pump flange (DET commitment).

l Also accomplished was insulation removal in the drywell in response to Generic Letter /

' 96-03.  !

O It was also determined that the modification would require the installation ofextensive conduit runs. This resulted in a significant increase, over what had been previously assumed, in both the scope and cost of the modification, and in the radiation dose g\

estimate. Therefore, the signal and drive cable replacement was removed from the outage scope. An evaluation will be completed to determine future plans concerning this l modification. Our final resolution of this issue will be transmitted to you by August 5, l 1997.
