Updated Radiological Environmental Evaluation of Dresden Site NRC Docket Numbers50-010. 237. and 249 The purpose of this letter is to provide an updated status of the Special Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program around the Dresden site. No sample in the special environmental sampling program has yielded positive  :

results for gamma-emitting isotopes. Well DSP-149 showed an increase in i tritium concentration in August,1996. A further discussion on DSP-149 is l given in the Attachment.

All other tritium sampling program results from the third quarter of 1996 are consistent with previously reported levels for tritium from 1995 and the first and second quarters of 1996.

i If there are any questions concerning the Special Radiological Environmental Sampling Program, please contact Cliff Howland, Radiation Protection Manager, Dresden Station at (815) 942-2920, Ext. 3841.

Sincerely, j i

s Well DSP-149 is located north of the protected area, but within the owner  :

controlled area. The well has a quarterly collection schedule. On August 1, t 1996 the well was sampled for the 3rd quarter. The sample results showed a j concentration of 8,079 247;1,126 pCi/L. This is approximately double the -  ;

normal concentration. As a result of the increased reading, the sample  ;

collection frequency was increased to once every two weeks. Once the  !

concentration returned to historically average levels, the sampling frequency  ;

was changed to monthly starting in October l i

At the present time the cause of the increase in tritium concentration is j unknown. The sample collection was performed roughly one week following  ;

a very heavy rainfall. DSP-149 will continually be sampled monthly until such  !

a time as it consistently follows the historical average, at which time it will go ,

back to a quarterly collection. l l
