Gentlemen:

By letter dated April 1,1997 (0CNA049704), the NRC issued Generic Letter 97-01, f

" Degradation of Control Rod Drive Mechanism Nozzle and Other Vessel Closure Head Penetrations," which requested licensees to provide 30 and 120-day responses. The NRC requested licensees to indicate in the 30-day response whether or not the requested information will be submitted and whether or not the requested information will be submitted within the requested time period. The purpose of this submittal is to provide the 30-day response. l Entergy Operations at Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO) has been participating in Combustion Engineering and Babcock and Wilcox Owners Groups' activities to address reactor vessel head nozzle cracking issues. Entergy Operations is continuing this participation and is working with industry groups in order to assemble and analyze the relevant information.

Entergy Operations intends to submit information relative to Generic Letter 97-01 for ANO within the requested 120-day period. Should it be determined that portions of the requested information cannot be provided, a discussion will be provided in the 120-day response.
