Ladies / Gentlemen:

DOCKETS 50-266 AND 50-301 GENERIC LETTER 97-01: DEGRADATION OF CONTROL ROD DRIVE MECHANISM NOZZLE AND OTHER VESSEL CLOSURE HEAD PENETR.ATIONS 30 - DAY RESPONSE POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 By letter dated April 1,1997, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission transmitted to licensees Generic Letter 97-01. The Generic Letter requested licensees to provide, within 120 days of the date of the letter, information related to the inspection of control rod drive mechanism nozzles and other vessel head penetrations. Specifically, the NRC staff requested data related to inspections performed to date as well as the schedule for future inspections. In addition, information related to resin incursions, if any, into the Reactor Coolant System was requested.

As noted in the Generic Letter, an inspection of the Point Beach Nuclear Plant Unit I vessel head penetrations was conducted in 1994. All of the penetrations were inspected to the extent possible. No indications were detected. A discussion of the inspection performed and the results achieved is documented in an NRC trip report from Mr. Chuck Hsu to Mr. Jack E. Rosenthal dated April 26,1994.
