1.0 Introduction Dresden Nuclear Power Station is a three reactor generating facility owned and operated by the Comed Company of Chicago, Illinois. Dresden Station is located at the confluence of the Kankakee and Des Plaines Rivers, in Grundy County, near Morris, Illinois.

Dresden Unit 1 is a General Electric Boiling Water Reactor with a design net electrical output rating of 200 megawatts electrical (MWe). The unit is retired in place with all nuclear fuel removed from the reactor vessel. Therefore, no Unit 1 operating data is provided in this report.

Dresden Units 2 and 3 are General Electric Boiling l

Water Reactors, each licensed at 2527 megawatts thermal. The gross outputs of Units 2 and 3 are 832 and 834 megawatts electrical, respectively, with design net electrical output ratings of 794 MWe each. The commercial service date for Unit 2 is 11 August 1970, and 30 October 1971 for Unit 3.

Waste heat is rejected to a man-made cooling lake using the Kankakee River for make-up and the Illinois River i for blowdown.  !

The Architect-Engineer for Dresden Units 2 and 3 was .

Sargent and Lundy of Chicago, Illinois. I This report for February 1997, was compiled by Gary A. l Abrell of Dresden Regulatory Assurance Staff, telephone i number (815) 942-2920, extension 3749.

SUMMARY

Unit 2 was on system at the beginning of the  !

period near full power. At 0110 on February 1, 1997, load was reduced to 676 MWE for surveillance testing. Load increase to full power began at 1115 that day.

l At 1148 on February 3, 1997 load was reduced 130 l MWE to remove 2F Condensate Demineralizer Unit from service. Full power was restored at 2300.

At 0050 on February _8, 1997 commenced a load drop to 550 MWE for surveillance testing. Load was held at this level following discovery of a ,

mispositioned control rod. Load increase was begun on February 12 following the investigation and corrective action.

At 1915 on February 14 commenced load drop for-control rod drive exercising and other minor maintenance including adding oil to 2A Recirc Pump

' Motor Bearings. Load increase began at 1020 on February 16, and the unit was near. full power by i 1040 on February 17.

The unit remained at full power until 2110 on February 27, 1997 when load was reduced approximately 10%.because feedwater inlet  ;

temperature exceeded the nominal value of 340*F.

The significance of this condition is under investigation.
