I o.ve uo,ey Southern Nudear Operating Company l Vice President i Farley Project the southem electnc system May 14, 1996 l Docket Nos. 50-348 i 50-364 l U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission j ATIN.: Document Control Desk Wo.shington, DC 20555 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant Soent Fuel Pool Cooling Ladies and Gentlemen:

As a result of a recent review of the spent fuel pool design, the NRC Staff verbally requested confirmation of the temperatures maint . N in the spent fuel pool during the normal full core i offload. Based on interviews of Farley operators, normal eperating temperature of the Farley Unit l 1 and Unit 2 spent fuel pools, including the time when the full core is offloaded, is less than l 140 F. This temperature is maintained with only one train of spent fuel pool cooling.

l Additionally, both trains of spent fuel pool cooling are normally available when the full core is off

!. loaded. However, it should be noted that maintenance on spent fuel pool cooling supporting systems, e.g., service water or component cooling water, does occur during the period the full core is offloaded.

If there are any questions, please advise.

Respectfully submitted, i
