Re: Docket No. STN 50-482 Subj: Final 10CFR50.55(e) Report - Mechanical Shock Arrestors

Dear Mr. Hunter:

This letter provides a final report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning mechanical shock arrestors installed at Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS) .

This concern was initially reported by Mr. H.K. Chernoff of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) , to Mr. Lawrence Martin of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on August 23, 1984.

During a review of documentation packages related to the installation of mechanical shock arrestors (snubbers), it was observed that the recorded "L"/

pin to pin (PP) dimension was not within the range specified on the Special Instruction Sheet. As a result of this concern, a review of accepted snubber traveler packages was performed. Other examples were found where the recorded "L"/PP dimension was outside of the specified range. In order to resolve this concern a Corrective Action Report (CAR No. 1-H-0044) was initiated.

The Corrective Action Report directed that a documentation revic't and/or field walkdown of all mechanical shock arrestor installations be performed to assure that the installed condition of the snubber does in fact fall within the allow-able range. Any discrepancies identified during this process will be recorded and an engineering evaluation performed to determine what if any rework will be needed to resolve the identified discrepancies.

All corrective actions identified including any necessary rework to mechanical shock arrestors will be completed prior to fuel load. If you have any questions concerning this subject, please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

Yours very truly, GLK:bb # ff) xc:RCDeYoung PO'Connor HBundy 8410100259 84C921 PDR ADOCK 05000482
