A RESOIl1 TION OF THE BOROUGH COUNCIL OF THE BOROUGH q -
0F HIGHSPIRE, DAUPHIN COUNIY, PD01SYLVANIA, REAFFIRM-ING RESOLUTION 5-79 AND SUPPORTING THE POSITION OF THE GOVERNOR OF PDRISYLVANIA ON TMI RESTART AS INDICATED IN HIS JUNE 2, 1983 LEITER TO THE NRC.
WHEREAS, the Borough Council on July 17, 1979, after a July 5, 1979 public forum, resolved that the Thme Mile Island Nuclear Facility be permanently closed; and hMEREAS, nore than four years after the March 28, 1979 accident'at TMI Unit 2, decontamination and renoval of fuel has not been completed; and WHEREAS, General Public Utilities, owners of TMI Units 1 and 2 are petition-ing the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Cor: mission for authority to operate TMI Unit 1; and -
hEEREAS, operation of Unit 1 is perceived as a threat to area citizens; and hEEREAS, Governor Dick Thornburgh on June 2, 1983 sent a letter to the Chairnan, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Conmission urging postponement of restart until certain issues have been satisfactorily addressed and resolved; NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Highspire Borough Council supports the actions of Governor Thornburgh and reaffirms its belief that TMI Unit 2 be decontaminated and defueled as safely as possible and that TMI be perranently closed as a nuclear facility.
