In a letter dated January 23, 1990, the staff acknowledged receipt of-the CP&L's response to Generic Letter 89 16, Installation of a Hardened Wetwell Venr. This letter also stated that completion of the requisite vont modification for each unit by January,1993 is acceptable and requested that any changes to the completion schedule must be discussed with the staff prior to their implementation, with the final schedules not to excend beyond i January, 1993. At the request of the Brunswick Project Manager, CP&L is -
submitting this clarification of the schedule commitment for installation of hardened vents by providing the currently projected outage dates.
As committed in CP&L's October 27, 1989 response to Generic Letter 89 16, i hardened vents will be installed at Brunswick by "either January 1, 1993 or -
during the'second refueling outage from the date of this letter (October 27, ;
1989), whichever is later." The Company intends to perform hardened vent ,
-modifications during the second refueling outage after October 27, 1989 for each unit. These outages are the Reload 8 outage for Brunswick 1, currently '
scheduled to begin February 1992, and the Reload 10 outage for Brunswick-2, ,
currently scheduled to begin October 1992. It must be recognized that outage !
dates are subject to change and that the possibility exists that the i Brunswick 2 outage may shift to such an extent that hardened vent installation would not be completed by January 1,1993. ;
The Company understands that the BWR Owners Group notified the staff that utilities would complete vent installation in approximately three years or two t
p refueling outages. .CP&L's commitment is consistent with the BWR Owners Group position.
