VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND PowrR COMPANY RICHMOND, VIRGINIA 23261 January 31, 1990 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Serial No. 89 844B Attention: Document Control Desk NUDEO/deq Washington, D.C. 20555 Docket Nos. 50 338 50 339 License Nos. NPF 4 NPF 7 Gentlemen:

VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE KAMAN PROCESS VENT RADIATION MONITORS Rl GW 178 and RI VG 179 By letters dated December 11 and December 22,1989 (Serial Nos. 89 844 and 89-844A), Virginia Electric and Power Company submitted Special Reports to the NRC, pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2, concern ~ lng the operable status of Kaman Process Vent Radiation Monitors, RI GW 178 and RI VG 179. In these reports, we identified the heat trace system on the sample lines as being the cause for the-Inoperable monitors. We also indicated that corrective measures were scheduled to be~

complete and the radiation mon' tors returned to service by January 31,1990.

\

Repairs to the heat trace system on the sample lines for RI GW 178 and RI VG-179 .j have been completed. RI-VG 180 heat trace, identified in the December 22 letter, will be upgraded under routine maintenance. RI VG 179 satisfactorily passed the post maintenance calibration and was returned to service on January 31,1990. However, i

RI GW 178 failed to pass the post maintenance calibration for sample flow. As a result, RI-GW 178 will not be returned to service by January 31, 1990. Repair of the flow control cl.rcuitry is scheduled to be completed by February 15,1990. At that t!me, we anticipate that RI GW 178 will be calibrated and returned to service.

The continued inoperable status of RI GW 178 has no significant safety implications since the alternate method of monitoring was established within 72 hours8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
as required by the Technical Specifications. The Westinghouse Process Vent Radiation Monitors, which perform the same automatic function as Rl GW 178, will continue to be i maintained operable throughout this evolution. Additionally, the Nuclear Research Corporation Radiation Monitors will continue to operate as the Technical Specification-requires for the alternate monitoring method on the Process Vent release path, l
