a) License No. DPR-28 (Docket No. 50-271) b) USNRC Bulletin No. 89-02, NVY 89-152, dated 7/19/89 Dear Sir

Subject:

Stress Corrosion Cracking of High-Hardness Type 410 Stainless Steel Internal Preloaded Bulting in Anchor '

Darling Model S350W Swing Check Valves or Valves of Similar Design Bulletin 89-02 [ Reference b)] requested all licensees to determine if any Anchor Darling Model S350W swing check valves or valves of similar design, with ASTM A193 Grade B6 Type 410 SS internal bolting material, are installed in safety-related plant systems. The Bulletin requests that licensees who determine that they do not have Anchor Darling Model S350W swing check valves with Type 410 SS bolts subject to the Bulletin and do not have any valves of similar design with preloaded Type 410 SS bolt material to provide a letter of confirmation of these facts to the NRC within 180 days of receipt of Reference b). Reference b) was received by Vermont Yankee on July 21, 1989.

Vermont Yankee has conducted a review of all swing check valves installed in safety-related systems with regard to Bulletin 89-02 concerns and has determined that there are no valves installed in these systems at Vermont Yankee which are similar in design and internal bolting material to the subject valves discussed in Bulletin 89-02. Vermont Yankee has iden-tified three swing check valves of similar design, from manufacturers other than Anchor Darling, installed in plant safety-related systems: however, internal bolting of these valves do not consist of Type 410 SS material and therefore fall outside the area of concern of Bulletin 89-02. It should also be noted that these valves are included in the Vermont Yankee Check Valve Inspection Program, and are therefore included in ongoing inspection activities.
