PROGRAM SCOPE (304) 433-6337 This was an unannounced assist inspection of a silica manufacturer authorized to use byproduct material in fixed gauges to provide density measurements for controlling industrial processes.

At the time of the inspection, the licensee possessed four gauges at its plant in Berkley Springs, West Virginia:

two TN Technologies Model 5202 gauges and two Texas Nuclear 5080 Series gauges. One 5202 gauge was in storage awaiting disposal; the other was in use. The two 5080 gauges were mounted to process equipment but were not currently in use. Note that the licensee's RSO is based near the Berkley Springs plant, but receives correspondence at the mailing address listed on the license. PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS The inspector toured the facility in Berkeley and conducted radiological surveys of all the gauges using an Eberline R0-2 meter (NRC Serial No. 1239, calibration date 12/08/2017).

All exposure rates were within the ranges listed on the applicable sealed source and device registries.

All general area dose rates near the installed gauges were less than 0.1 mR/h. The inspector reviewed current records for leak tests, inventory, shutter tests, and self-assessments, and interviewed the site RSO, who was knowledgeable of license and program requirements.

No violations ofNRC requirements were identified as a result of this inspection.
