Dear Ms. Underwood:

The Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) has been permitted to use FerroQuest LP7202 as a cooling water treatment additive in the plant circulating water system to control scale. Permission was granted in Directors Final Findings and Orders dated August 13, 1997. Pursuant to a telephone conversation on February 18, 1999, held between yourself and Ms. Donna Tizzano, PNPP will be using FerroQuest 7200 in the service water system to control scale.

The PNPP staff believes this treatment to be permitted under the current permit. FerroQuest 7200 is the same chemical as FerroQuest 7202, but only 25% of the concentration. The chemical treatment is to be performed on a much smaller portion of the service water system than described in the Directors Final Findings and Orders. The concentration permitted at the discharge to Lake Erie is 72 mg/L. The proposed discharge concentration for this treatment is 1 mg/I.. This treatment will not challenge the terms and conditions of the existing permit.
