Dear Mr. Rikohoff:

Please refer to the ongoing section 7 consultation between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regarding permit renewal for the Ameren Missouri Callaway Power Plant in Callaway County, Missouri. As part of the consultation, the NRC required of Ameren sampling to assess potential entrainment and impingement risk for the federally endangered pallid sturgeon. The Service has reviewed Ameren's March 2017 Impingement and Entrainment Study provided in Ms. Briana Grange's April 6, 2017, email. Ms. Grange also included links (below) to previous correspondence between the agencies. The Service offers the following comments pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (as amended)(16 U.S.C. 1531-1544).

Ameren worked with state and federal agency staff to design a study to address the potential risk of entraining or impinging federally endangered pallid sturgeon at their Callaway facility. Ameren also hosted a field visit to demonstrate their sampling techniques for Service staff and allow us an opportunity to interact with the contractors responsible for the study. Based on the information in the March 2017 study and the field demonstration at the facility, the Service concurs with the NRC's determination that the license renewal is not likely to adversely affect the pallid sturgeon. Should the action or permit conditions change, please contact this office.

Thank you for the opportunity to review the Callaway study. If you have questions regarding our comments, please contact me at the number below.

Best regards -
