SUMMARY

OF JULY 16, 2009, CONFERENCE CALL WITH ENTERGY OPERATIONS, INC. ON DRAFT RESPONSE TO THE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI) FOR GENERIC LETTER (GL) 2004-02, "POTENTIAL IMPACT OF DEBRIS BLOCKAGE ON EMERGENCY RECIRCULATION DURING DESIGN BASIS ACCIDENTS AT PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS," (TAC NOS. MC4663 AND MC4664)

On July 16, 2009, a Category 1 conference call was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of Entergy Operations, Inc. (Entergy, the licensee).

The purpose of the call was to discuss the draft response to the RAI for GL 2004-02, "Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation during Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized Water Reactors" sent to the licensee on June 22, 2009 (ADAMS Accession No. ML091730285), provide feedback on the licensee's plans and discuss any points of disagreements and discuss the licensee's path forward.

Members of the public were not in attendance. Other Entergy representatives of Palisades Nuclear Plant and Waterford Steam Electric Station, Unit 3, and the licensee contractor were on the call. Enclosed is a list of attendees.

The NRC staff requested the licensee to expand its response to questions A12 and B18 regarding the stainless steel divider plates installed between the two halves of the sump, and to provide the technical basis for concluding that blockage would not occur at this plate.

Regarding ANO-2, the NRC staff questioned the reliance on the zone of influence (ZOI) reduction (RAls B2 and B3a) and suggested that the licensee evaluate how it might be avoided.

Please direct any inquiries to me at 301-415-1480, or kaly.kalyanam@nrc.gov.
