'IA23/8"diameterby1/4"pitch,1/4"lead,lefthandstemwasusedtosimulatethestemofavalvebeingopenedandclosedThespeedofoperation wasapproximately 6"perminuteovera12"travel.LThedesignedseatingthrusttobeexertedonthe.stembytheLimitorque valvecontrolwas16,500poundsofthrustintheclosedpositionofthevalvestem.Aslidewireelectricpositiontrans-mitter.wasalsoinstalled andconnected toaremotepositionreceiveroutsidethetestchamber.TESTSTOBEPERFORMED ONOPERATOR1.Preliminary heattestsoncomponent parts.2.Preliminary heattestsonactuator.

l.PRELIMINARY HEATTESTSONCOMPONENT PARTSThestandardLimitorque operatorgearedlimitswitchandtorqueswitchwassubjected toadryheattestforapproxi-mately16hoursatatemperature of375'F.Periodically duringthistest,theswitcheswereremovedfromtheovenandactuatedbyhand.Theoperation wassatisfactory andnomal-'unctions occurred.
Allpartsfunctioned freelyandtherewasnobinding,jamming,norabnormaldistortion of.parts.Thetestwassuccessful inallrespects.
2.~PRELIMINARY HEATTESTSONACTUATORAcompletely assembled andoperational Limitorque operatorwasplaced.inanovenwherethetemperature wasmaintained atapproximately 325'F.foradurationof12hours.Theunitwaselectrically operatedeverythirtyminutesforaperiodofapproximately twominutespercycleandusingthegearedlimitswitchestostoptheactuatoratthefullopenandfullclosedpositionoftravel.Indicating lightcircuitswerealsowired.tothegearedlimitswitches.
Thetestwassuccessful ineveryrespect.Therewerenomalfunctions oftheoperatoranduponinspection ofthecom--ponen'tpartsused,therewasnonoticeable deterioration orwear.Thelubricant usedinhegearedlimitswitchdidbecomehardandcaked,howeverthelubricant usedintheLimitorque
gearhousingremainedpliableandhaditsoriginalconsistency.
Itwasdetermined thatthegreaseinthegearedlimitswitchgearhousingshouldbechangedtothesamegreaseasintheLimitorque operatorgearhousing.3'..PRELIMINARY LIVESTEPSTESTONACTUATOR~AcompleteLimitorque actuatorwassetupforelectrical operation andlivesteamwaspipedintotheconduittapsonthetopofthelimitswitchcompartment.
Oneofthebottomconduittapswasleftopentodrainoffanycondensate.
Theoperatorwassetuponatimerbasisforoperation overaperiodofapproximately ninehoursandoperating everythirtyminutesfortwominutespercycle.Duringthistest,thelivesteamintheswitchcompartment seemedtohavenoeffectwhateveronthefunctionofthe.limitswitchesin'heircontroloftheoperatoratthefull.openandfullclosedpositionoftravel.Inaddition, thelimitswitcheswerewireduptoindicating lightswhichoperatedsatisfactorily.
Thetestwassuccessful andtherewasnonoticeable effectonthefunctionofanyofthepartsinthelimitswitchcom-partment.
4.HEATAGINGTEST.OFELECTRICMOTORANDELECTRICMOTORWITHBRAKETheelectricmotorfortheLimitorque operatortobeusedintheenvironment testandanotherelectricmotorequippedwithadisktypebrakeweresub'jected toaheatagingtest.
BothelectricmotorsweresenttoReliance, ElectricCo.forheatagetesting.Thistestconsisted ofbakingthemotorsatatemperature of180'C.foratotalof100hourstosimulateagingthemotortoa40yearlifeexpectancy.
Motorinsulation checkswere.madeandfound.to.bewithinnormallimits.There.werenoadverseeffectsonthemotorsandmotorinsulation resi'stance measured'infinity toground.5..SHOCKANDVIBRATION TESTOFACTUATORTOSIMULATESEISMICCONDITIONS TheLimitorque operatortobeusedintheenvironment testwasshippedcompletetotheLockheedElectronics Co.,inPlain-.field,NewJersey,forshockandvibration testingtosimulateseismicconditions.
Acopyofthisreportisenclosedherewith.
Thetestbasically consisted ofmountingtheLimitorque operatoronashockandvibration tabletotestitat'20cyclespersecondvibration at.1Gloadforaperiodoftwominutesononeminuteoff.Thiswouldconstitute onecycle.Thecyclewasrepeatedfivetimesinboththeverticalandhorizontal axisoftheoperator.
Theactualtestreportandphotographs areincludedhere.Thetestwassuccessful andtherewasnonoticeable effectwhatsoever ontheLimitorque operator.
,~~~6~150LIFECYCLETESTOFLIMITORQUE OPERATORPRODUCING APPROXIMATELY 16,500POUNDSTHRUSTTheLimitorque operatorwasshippedtotheFranklinInstitute ResearchLaboratories, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Theoperatorwasmountedonastandinsidethetestchamberanda150cycleloadtestwasmadeontheunit.Thistestconsisted ofstrokingthe23/8"diametervalvestematotalofapproximately 12inchesintwominutes.Thevalvesteminthefullclosedpositionproducedathrustof16,500poundsonarigidplatesecurelyboltedtothetestchamber.Thethrustwasmeasuredbythesamestrain-gauge recording instru-mentusedintheactualenvironmental testconducted bytheFranklinInstitute.
Theunitwaswiredupsothattheclosing(y.direction andtheopenpositiongearedlimitswitchstoppedtheunitinthefullopenposition.
Thespeedof.travelwas6inchesperminute.Afterthelifecycletestingwascompleted, theunitwasinspected and-foundtobeinexcellent condition.
Therewasnonoticeable wearonanyoftheparts.ThesameelectricImotorwhichhadbeenheatagetestedatRelianceElectricCo.wasusedforthislifeCycletest.Therewasnonoticeable adverseeffectontheelectricmotorandit.functioned properly.
7.TESTOFLIMITORQUE VALVEOPERATORUNDERSIMULATED
'REACTORCONTAINMENT POST-ACCIDENT STEAMANDCHEMICALENVIRONMENT TheattachedreportoftheFranklinInstitute ResearchLaboratories describes theactualtestingunderthisenviron-
wmentalcondition.
Afterthetest.wascompleted, theLimitorque operatorwasshippedbacktoPhiladelphia GearCorporation, KingofPrussia,'ennsylvania whereitwasdisassembled andall.partswereinspected.'hotographs areincludedshowingthevarious-partsoftheoperator.
Allparts,including theelectricmotor,slidewereposition'ransmitter,.
seals,bearings, gears,andshafts,wereinspected andnonoticeable wearwasnoted.However,thegearframe.ofthegearedlimit.switchhadcorrodedandcausedaminorfailure.Thegearedlimitswitchframehadbeenattackedbytheboricacidinthesteamatmosphere.
Thiscausedthegearframetocorrodeand..resulted inbinding,upoftheshaftsofthegearedlimitswitchwheretheyextendthroughthegearedlimitswitchhousing.Thiscausedthemalfunction oftheswitchasdescribed intheFranklinInstitute ResearchLabor-atories'eport.
Amaterialchangehasbeeninstituted tocorrectthiscorrosive actionofthematerialusedinthatparticular switch.Onallpresent'ordersbeingprocessed, andonallfutureunitstobeshippedtomeetenvironmental conditions suchasthis,thegearframehousingofthegeared'limitswitchwillbeabronzematerialwhichisnotsubjectltocorrosion byboricacidsolutions.
Themotorinsulation resistance afteralltestingwas1,000megohmsacrossall'threemotorterminals togroundat500volts.
