Thesafetyrelatedroomsarepouredinplaceconcretestructures, whilethenonsafety relatedroomsusemasonarywalls.DuringthetestingofC02systemsinthesafetyrelatedareas,asexpected, apositivepressureoccurredintheroomsinordertomeetNFPA12concentrations.

Thesepressures mayexceedthedesignallowable valuesforthenonsafety relatedmasonarywalls.Atthistime,weareevaluating thesedesigns.TheuseoftheC02systeminthesenonsafety relatedareaswillbeunderstrictadministrative controlsunderthedirectcontroloftheStationShiftSupervisor.

Intheinterim,weplantousebackuphosestreamsandportableextinguishers forprotection ofthesenonsafety relatedareas.NiagaraMohawkiscontinuing topursuearesolution; however,weanticipate thatthedesignsolutioncouldgobeyondfuelload.Baseduponthisschedule, aFinalSafetyAnalysischangetoSections9.5.1and9A.3isprovidedinAttachment 1forNuclearRegulatory Commission reviewandapproval.

Thechangeremovesthecommitment touseC02inthenonsafety relatedareas,whichisstillconsistent withtheStandardReviewPlan.Further,thischangedoesnotaffecttheTechnical Specifications.

'ystemsareprovidedfortheseareas.Incalculating fireloadingforthedieselgenerator room,afueloilpiperupturehasbeenassumedwiththeentirecontentsofthefueloildaytankspilledonthefloor.Itwasalsoconsidered thatallofthelubeoilcontained inthecrankcase oftheenginewouldleakout.Theseassumptions resultedinafireloadingof2hr24min,whichisstilllessthanthe3-hrwallsthathavebeen.provided.

Automatic pre-action watersprinkler systemshavebeenprovidedforthedieselgenerator building.

Thenormalswitchgear buildingalsohasahighfireloading,butitisJ.essthanthe3-brfirewallsthathavebeenprovide.d.

Fireloadingforallotherareasisapproximately 2hrorless.Inspiteofthelowfireloading,3-hrfirewallshavebeenprovidedwhereverseparation isrequiredordesirable.

FireDetection andSuressionSstemsEachareaoftheturbinebuildingisprotected byazoned,earlywarningsmokedetection systemarrangedtoalarmlocallyandinthecontrolroom.Automatic wet-pipesprinkler systemsareprovidedforprotection ofgeneralareasatel250ft0inand277ft6in.Asystemofsixautomatically operatedfoamwatersprinkler systems(foaminjection ismanuallycontrolled) coverstheareaundertheturbinegenerator belowel306ft0in.Thesesystemswouldlayablanketoffoamonthefloorundertheturbinegenerator atel277ft6intocoveranyaccumulation ofburningorunburnedoilbeingdischarged fromaleakonthemachineandtoflowdownthesidesofthemachine'nd layablanketoffoaminthecondenser pit,atel239ft4in.Thefoamwatersprinkler systemsutilizeopenfoamwatersprinkler headsspacedtoachieveareacoverage, andthewaterphaseisactuatedautomatically byheatdetectors.
