1.0INTRODUCTION

TheNRCrequestedRG&Etoestablishashorttermtendonforcemonitoringprogramfollowingthe1980tendonretensioningprogramtoensuretendonprestresslevelspriortothescheduledJuly1981surveillance.TheprogramactuallystartedinMarch,1981usingfour800,000poundcapacitysplitloadcellswhichhadbeeninstalledinApril,1969.TheiroriginalfunctionhadbeentomonitortendonforcelevelsduringtheinitialStructuralIntegrityTest.Theseloadcellswereinstalledbeneaththeanchoragesoftendons13,53,93and133.Inadditiontotheforcemonitoring,RG&Ealsoinstitutedatemperaturemonitoringprogram.Thiswastodeterminetheeffectofseasonalvariationsontendonforces.Thermocoupleswereinstalledineachoffivetendonconduits(thefourtendonspreviouslymentionedplustendon126)abouttwofeetdownfromthetopanchorage.Thermocoupleswerealsoinstalledontheexteriorsurfaceofthecontainmentbuildingwalladjacenttoeachofthe'bovefivetendons.Tendon126,althoughnothavingaloadcell,wasincludedinthetemperaturemonitoringbecauseitpassesaroundasteamlinepenetration,asdoestendon53.ThelongtermmonitoringprogrambeganinAugust1981,followingcalibrationoftheloadcellsduringtheJuly,1981surveillance,andwasconcludedinJuly,1982.2.0EVALUATIONPROCEDUREFivevariableswerepresentedinthefielddatasuppliedfortheevaluation(Reference1):a.tendonconduitinternaltemperatureb.concretesurfacetemperatureQbertIComeewealS c.containmentbuildinginternaltemperatured.averageoutdoorambienttemperaturee.tendonforceInanefforttodeterminetherelationshipsbetweenthedata,thefollowingcurvesweredevelopedforeachtendon:a~temperaturevstimeb.measuredtendonforcevstendonconduitinternaltemperaturec~d0correctedtendonforcevstendonconduitinternaltemperaturemonthlyaveragetendonforcevstime3.0RESULTSOFEVALUATIONa~TemperaturevsTime(Figures1through5)-Thesefiguresindicatethat,fortendons13,93and133,thetendonconduitinternaltemperaturecloselyfollowstheconcretesurfacetemperatureandtheoutsideambienttemperature.Theconduitinternaltemperature,beingmeasuredatanelevationwherethecontainmentisexposedtooutsideambienttemperature,isnotsignificantlyaffectedbythecontainmenttemperature.Fortendons53and126,whicharebothadjacenttosteampenetrations,theconduitinternaltemperaturestillbasicallyfollowsthevariationsinconcretesurfaceandoutdoortemperaturesbutissomewhathigherintemperature,aswouldbeexpected.Itisexpectedthattemperaturesfurtherdownineachconduit,belowtheadjacentbuildingroofs,wouldshowlessvariationwiththeoutsideambienttemperature.Thetemperaturesattheselocationswouldbehigher,beingclosetotheaverageofthetemperaturesinsidethecontainmentandtheadjacentbuilding.b.MeasuredTendonForcevsConduitInternalTemperaturel(Figures6bthrough9b)-Sincetendon126hadnoloadcell,QbertICommonweaIth itisnotincludedinthesefigures.Fortheremainingfourtendons(withloadcells),theplotteddataarescattered,butthedatadoesdisplaythetrendofareductionintendonforcewithincreasingtemperature.Itisnotedthat,sincethedatacoversatwelvemonthperiod,thetendonforcesarebeingaffectednotonlybytemperature,butbystressrelaxationaswell.Toseetheeffectoftemperatureonlyonthetendonforce,thestressrelaxationlossesovertheperiodofinterestmustbeaddedtotheloadcellvalues.Inordertoestablishtheapproximateamountofstressrelaxationexperiencedbyeachofthesetendonsovertheone-yearperiod,twodatasetsofequaltemperature,asmanymonthsapartaspossible,wereselectedforeachtendon.Fromthedifferencesintheforcereadings,monthlyratesofstressrelaxationlosswerederivedandappliedtotheloadcellforcereadings.Tables1,2,3and4areincludedtoshowthetabulationofthesevalues.c-CorrectedTendonForcevsTendonConduitInternalTemp.(Figures6athrough9a)-Oncethetendonforceshavebeencorrectedforstressrelaxationandarethenplottedagainsttemperature,amorelinearrelationshipbetweentendonforceandconduitinternaltemperaturebecomesapparent.Forthefourtendonsforwhichforceandtemperaturewasavailable,thetendonforcereducesbyabout2kipsforeach10Fincreaseintheinternaltemperatureofthetendonconduitwithinthetemperaturerangeofavailabledata.Itshouldbenotedthatonlyasmallverticalportion(17ft.average)oftheexteriorwallisexposedtooutsideambientairtemperatures,withthebalance(94ft.average)beingadjacenttotheinteriorareasofotherbuildings.CalculationsshowthatifthefullLengthofthetendonsweresubjectedtothetemperaturechangerecordedbytheconduitQbert/Commonwealth internalthermocouples,theforcechangewouldbeaboutan8kipsreductionforeach10oFincreaseintendonconduitinternaltemperature.d.MonthlyAverageTendonForcevsTime(Figures10through13)-Thetendonloadcellswerereadonthe10th,20thand30thofeachmonth(Reference1).Theaverageofthethreevaluesoftendonforcesmeasuredeachmonthareplottedassoliddotsagainsttime.Theresultisacurveshowingbasicallyaconstantorevenaslightlyincreasingtendonforceasthetestingprogramprogressedfromwarmweather(Aug.'81)throughthewintermonthsuptoaboutApril1982.Thistrendoccursbecausethestressrelaxationofthetendonisoffsetbythegeneraltrendofdecreasingambienttemperatures.BeyondApril1982thetendonforcesfalloffaswarmweatherisencountered.Theaveragetendonforcereducedby15kipsfromApril1982toJuly1982,andmostofthisdeclinecanbeattributedtotemperature,asdiscussedbelow.ThemonthlyaverageofthetendonforceshasbeencorrectedforstressrelaxationinTables1,2,3and4andenteredonFigures10,11,12and13as"X"s.Thecorrectedcurvesshowanaverageincreaseintendonforceof5kips,whichisassociatedwiththedecreasingtemperaturetrendasthetestingprogressedfromAugust1981toApril1982.Thereisanaveragelossofforceof12kipsaswarmermonthswereagainencounteredfromApril1982toJuly1982.Therefore,ofthe15kipsaverageforceLossoverthislatterperiod,12kipsontheaverageisduetothegeneralincreaseinambienttemperaturewhichoccurred.

4.0CONCLUSION

STheloadcellresultsindicatethatthetendonforceswerereasonablystableovertheperiodfromAugust1981toJuly1982,andnoabnormalforceLossesoccurred.MostofthefluctuationinGilbert/Comnenwealth gt measuredforceduringthisperiodcanbeattributedtoseasonalvariationsinoutsideairtemperature.Theresultsindicatethatatendoncouldexhibitaforcelossaslargeas16kipsbetweentwomeasurementstakenfirstinWinterandtheninSummer,andmostofthislosswouldrelatetotemperature.Anapproximationofthetemperatureeffectisthattendonforceisinverselyproportionaltotemperature,andthetendonforcedeclinesabout2k'ipsforeach10Fincreaseinoutsidemonthlyaverageambienttemperature.
