UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION DOCKET NO. 50-272 PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC AND GAS COMPANY 7590-01 NOTICE OF GRANTING OF RELIEF FROM ASME SECTION XI INSERVICE TESTING REQUIREMENTS The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Corrmission (the Commission) has granted relief from certain requirements of the ASME Code,Section XI, "Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Compcinents 11 to Public Service Electric and Gas Company.
The relief relates to the inservice testing program for the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. l (the facility) located in Salem County, New Jersey.
The ASME Code requirements are incorporated by reference into the Commission's rules and regulations in 10 CFR Part 50.

The relief permits the licensee to test certain designated pumps and The valves in a manner or on a schedule different from that prescribed in Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Ve.ssel Code and applicable Addenda, as required by 10 CFR 50, because of inaccessibility, configuration of compo-nents, radiation level, or other valid reasons.
The request for relief comp~ies with the standards and requirements of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended (the Act), and the Commission's rules and regulations.
The Commission has made appropriate findings as required by the Aat and the Commission's rules and regulations in 10 CFR Chapter I, which are set forth in the letter granting relief.

The Commission has determined that the granting of this relief will not result in any significant environmental impact and that pursuant to 10 CFR 51.5(d)(4) an environmental impact statement or negative declaration and environmental impact appraisal need not be prepared in connection with issuance of this relief.
For further details with respect to this action, see (1) the application for relief dated February 9, 1979, as revised March 10, 1980 and April 29, 1981, (2) the Commission's letter dated April 12, 1983, and (3) the Commission's related Safety Evaluation.
