The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a virtual public meeting May 18 to discuss the 2022 safety performance of the St. Lucie and Turkey Point nuclear power plants. The St. Lucie plant is located near Jensen Beach, Florida, and the Turkey Point plant is in Homestead, Florida. Florida Power & Light Co. operates both plants.

The meeting will be held from 3-4 p.m. Eastern time. The public can access the meeting via Microsoft Teams. The telephone conference number for those without access to the internet is 301-576-2978, passcode 672075967#. NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions at the meeting.

The NRC concluded that both plants operated safely in 2022, and all inspection findings and performance indicators were of very low safety significance. As a result, the plant s remain under the NRCs normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to assess plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. If an inspection finding or performance indicator has more than a very low safety significance, the NRC increases its oversight.
