Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2023 safety performance of the Fermi nuclear power plant during the Monroe City Council public meeting June 17. The plant, in Newport, Michigan, is operated by DTE Electric Co.

The NRC will present its assessment during the monthy city council meeting, held from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Eastern time, at the Monroe City Hall, 120 East 1st St., in Monroe. The public will be able to observe the NRCs presentation and then speak directly with NRC staff after the city council meeting. City council meetings are also streamed live on the city council YouTube channel.

The NRC will discuss its assessment of the plants 2023 performance. Staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight, including the resident inspectors based at the site, will be available to address any regulatory or technical questions and concerns.

The NRC determined that Fermi operated safely during 2023. All inspection findings and performance indicators were green or very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs baseline level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, based on the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than a very low safety significance trigger an increase of NRC oversight.

Plant inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and inspection specialists from the agencys Region III Office in Lisle, Illinois.
