NRC INSPECTION REPORT 70-925/98-01

Dear Mr. Larsen:

I On May 15,1998, the NRC concluded the onsite portion of an inspection of the Cimarron site near Crescent, Oklahoma. On June 25,1998, the NRC held a telephone discussion with a member of your staff in regard to the results of NRC analysis of confirmatory soil samples. The enclosed report presents the scope and results of the inspection.

The inspection covered the work in progress related to the placement in Pit 3 of in-situ soil meeting NRC Branch Technical Position Option 2 criteria. Soil sampling activities conducted by your staff were observed. Four soil samples were collected from Pit 3 for analysis by the NRC.

As part of the NRC's confirmatory sampling program for the Cimarron site, the results of these soil samples were compared with the results of the soil samples collected at the same locations by Cimarron. The results of the four soil samples were consistent and confirmed that the soilin Pit 3 met the NRC Branch Technical Position Option 2 criteria.

Additionally, this inspection included a review of final status survey data, instrument calibration records, and quality assurance audit reports.

No violations or deviations of regulatory requirements were identified during this inspection.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. Should you have any questions concerning this inspection, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.
