Operating License No. DPP,-50 Docket No. 50-289 Inservice Inspection (ISI) of Pipe Branch Connection Welds In accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(5)(iii), our letter of August 20, 1986 requested relief from ASME Code Section XI ISI requirements determined to be impractical. Our letter of October 20, 1986 provided additional information requested by the NRC staff in a conference call on September 16, 1986. The NRC's letter dated March 20, 1987 provided the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) which granted the relief that had been requested with the exception of two items. The SER requested additional information pertaining to item nos. 4 and 7 as numbered in GPUN's letters dated August 20, 1986 and October 20 1986.

Pelief Request No. 4 from our submittals dated August 20, 1986 and October 20,

' 986 pertain to Examination Category B-F, Reactor Vessel Core Flood Safe-End kelds, Item Bl.6. The SER dated March 20, 1987 requested that GPUN qualify the UT examination technique and provide the results for NRC review. These examinations are currently scheduled to be performed during the Cycle 9R Refueling Outage. Therefore, in accordance with our current schedule, GPUN intends to provide this information during the first quarter of 1991 after a contractor has been selected.

Relief Request No. 7 requested relief from volumetric examination of Class 2 pipe branch connection weld joints (Categories C-F and C-G, Item C2.3).

Please refer to GPUN submittals dated August 20, 1986 and October 20,1986 as those details that have been provided are not repeated in this letter.

Table 1 (attached) provides the additional information requested by the SER.

5211-87-2156 August 31, 1987 Also attached is GAI drawing E-301-017 which shows detailed design of the (16) applicable branch connections containing reinforcing pads. Inspections for which this relief request applies are currently scheduled to be performed during the Cycle 7R Refueling Outage. Therefore, GPUN is requesting that this relief be granted by January 1,1988.

In accordance with 10CFR170.21, a check for $150.00 is enclosed to be applied toward the fee associated with-NRC' review of this request.
