INTRODUCTION AUD
SUMMARY
t i
Cleveland Electric Illuminating has undertaken a substantial program of
- geophysical / geological tasks to study the January 31. 1986 Leroy earthquake.
b These studies discussed generally in our letters of February "I and 9, 1986
, involve detailed aeromagnetic, ground gravity and geological surveys in the
,: epicentral area. In addition, the seismology of the region and the epicentral area are being reviewed and assessed, including the ground motion l characteristics of Dous 1 ~.: -train smaller earthquakes as well as larger earthquakes.
'f -
Based on information available to date, the safe shutdown earthquake selected
- . for the Perry Plant is appropriate. Geological reconnaissance in the epicentral d area has not revealed any evidence of capable faulting and the methodology for selecting the SSE on the basis of a tectonic province. given in Appendix A and j followed in the Final Safety Analysis Report for the Perry Nuclear Plant, is consistent with present knowledge.
On f' estuary 26. 1986, A meeting was held with the NRC staf f in Washington, D.C.
A report entitled preliminary Repcr t .. of Celsnoloqical and_ Geological J
Investications conducted In Epicentral Area of Janvery 31, 1986 Earthcuake ,Lrt Northeastern chio was submitted.
TASK BY TASK DISCUSSION i
! The following is a discussion of project progress on a task by task basis:
TASK GA-1 A complete search for all pertinent sources of literature and data
- available since the 19*79 FSAR on the subregional and regional Sm S.P 0396J
geology and geophysics is essentially complete. Sources which have been utilized during this compilation include:
i s
' GEOREF
,'
- Regional University Theses e EPRI Data
.' e Ohio EPA e Usos The majority of the information is now in house and presently
. being reviewed by geologists and geophysicists. This task will continue until completion of the project in order to insure a complete and up-to-date review of the literature.
In preparation for field mapping, several types of photographic
- imaging are being acquired and interpreted. At this time, preliminary interpretation of Synthetic Aperture Radar and
_; high- altitude color infrared photos is underway. Those photographs and images are suitable for locating regional-scale lineaments on land within a 50 mile rad *us of the site.
Additional high and low-altitude black and white photographs are presently on order delivery expected next week. This imagery will
~
be utilized for verifying previous interpretations, lineament analysis and for accurate locationing during field mapping.
TASK GA 2 1
-' 1 Geophysical well logs for more than 3000 wells drilled since 19'19 l in Lake, cuyahoga. Ashtabula. Geauga and Trumbull counties have been obtained from Ohio Geological survey records. The depths to I two, well established marker horizons, the " Packer Shell" and Delaware limestones, are being picked from gacna ray logs. These 0396J

! formation depths will be computer plotted along with previously compiled data, to update structural contour maps in this area of northeastern Ohio. At present, data from over 1200 wells has been tabulated. These gas wells typically penetrate only to the Queenston Formation at depths ranging from 3,000 to 4.000 feet.
The updated structural contour maps will be used to determine if
'~
any large scale folding or faulting of the Paleozoic sedimentary
, column has taken place.
.I
- i. In addition to these shallower wells, data from deep wells which were drilled beyond these depths into the Precambrian basement have been obtained. Approximately ten feet of core from the j precambrian basement recovered in CALHIO Well No. I was examined to determine lithologic and structural characteristics.* The core
- is comprised of a chlorite schist intruded by rhyolite and diorite. The less competent foliated schist is in deteriorated condition while the metavolcanics are massive and sound. A ductile fault zone occurs within the schist and pegmatite at 6067.1' to 6068.1', characterized by tight and unfractured fine-grained texture. This type of fault occurs at high pressures and temperatures, and therefore is likely to have originated at
, depth in the Precambrian basement prior to erosion of the existing Precambian surface. Slickensided surfaces in the schist are generally irregular and discontinous. Evidence suggests that some of these fractures, apparently tight prior to coring, have opened during subsequent storage and handling. Additionally, this type of fracturing does not extend into the metavolcanics. Based on these observations, a through going preseable fracture or fault is
- not' indicated by this core. Rather, the type of lithologies and structures observed are characteristic of a metasedimentary
