The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO INADVERTENT MAIN STEAM IS0ILTION VALVE At 5:31 p.m. on April 20, 1977, with the plant operating at 100% power, an inadvertent closure of a main steam isolation valve caused a safety injection signal and a plant trip. All safety systems functioned as designed. The plant is being cooled down to effect repairs. The cause of the valve closure is not known at this time but repair efforts are expected to take 2 to 3 days.
There were no adverse safety consequences or personnel injuries. A NRC inspec-tor is on site reviewing the licensee's findings. ,
Media interest is expected because of recent feedwater system piping problems and close attention given to nuclear facilities. The State of Pennsylvania has been informed. A press release is not planned.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from an inspector onsite at 8:30 a.m. on April 21, 1977. -
