SUBJECT:

Segment 3 Fuel Element Inspection Program

REFERENCE:

P-84104, Warembourg To Collins, Dated April 6, 1984

Dear Mr. Johnson:

This letter is intended co advise you of our progress on photography of fuel elements.

Prior to beginning spent fuel shipping in July 1984, high quality photographs of Regions 18 and 33 had already been obtained and reviewed for matrix cracks; none were found.

Spent fuel shipping was suspended in November, 1984, until May, 1985, at the earliest. During 1984 spent fuel shipping, all spent fuel from Regions 18, 29, and 3 was shipped. Of these three regions, only Reofons 29 and 3 fuel elements needed to be photographed during spent fuel shipping.

Concerning our findings based on Regions 29 and 3 fuel, no matrix cracks were found. Photographs were taken at one power and 7h power magnification of each face of each block in these two regions.

When spent fuel shipping resumes, spent fuel from Regions 13, 22, and 33 will be shipped. Of these three regions, only Regions 29 and 22 .emain to be photographed during spent fuel shipping.

If you have further questions on this matter, please contact Mr. Frank Novachek of my staff at (303) 785-2224, Ext. 201.

Sincerely yours, 8502040497 850117 '
