Dear Sir:

In accordance with the requirements of Title 10, Chapter 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 21, Transamerica Delaval, Inc., hereby notifies the conniission of a potential defect in a ccuponent of a DSR or DSRV Standby Diesel Generator. There could exist a potential problem with a Westinghouse Electric Corporatim Type SA-1 Differential Relay which could result in Engine non-availability.

Transamerica Delaval has supplied the DSRV Engine with the potential defect to Middle South Energy, Grand Gulf Site only.

Le serial nuabers of these Engines is 74033/36. L e model of these Engines is DSRV 16.

W e problem with the Westinghouse Relay was reported in NRC Report, IE Information Notice No. 83-63, Supplement 1, dated February 15, 1984.

On the Grand Gulf Site, these Relays are used in the electrical Switchgear furnished by Transamerica Delaval. W is Switchgear was purchased by Transamerica Delaval frcm RTE DELTA Switchgear in Stockton, Califomia.

We relay in question is used to sense a fault in the Generator.

We mode of failure described in NRC 83-63, Suppleent 1 could either allow the system to have an undetected fault or a shutdown without a fault.

mrch 7, 1984 Page 2 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Cmmission By copy of this letter, we will ask RTE DELTA to review this untter and giva us their reconmendation for correction of the problem.

We will ask for their response by April 9, 1984.

A copy of this letter will also be sent to Grand Gulf as indicated by the cc. We will notify Grand Gulf of the RTE DELTA reconmendation by April 30, 1984.

Since action is required by others, we cannot estinnte when corrective action will be couplete.

Our evaluation of this potential problem was coupleted on March 6, 1984.
