Nuclear DNision July 28, 1980 Mr. James G. Keppler, Director Docket Nos.: STN 50-546 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission STN 50-547 Region III Construction Permit Nos.:

799 Roosevelt Road CPPR - 170 Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 CPPR - 171 Marble Hill Nuclear Generating Station - Units 1 and 2

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On April 3, 1979, Mr. C. E. Chmielewski of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc., (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). This item involved repair velds on one of the Unit 2 containment sump recirculation piping sleeves which were not re-radiographed after the repair welding was completed.

As plauned (see PSI's interim report of May 2, 1979) ultrasonic testing of the subject sleeve welds was performed by Chicago Bridge

& Iron to determine their quality. The results of this testing indicated that the welds were not defective and were acceptable as is.

Were this situation to have remained uncorrected it would not have affected adversely the safety of operations of the plant at anytime throughout the expected lifetime of the plant and therefore is not reportable. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely, C

S. W. Shields TDG/cg cc: Director of Inspection and Enforcement U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 E. R. Schweibinz, P. E.
