INFORMATION REQUESTED ON SHNPP VOLUME REDUCTION (VR)SYSTEM Type and volume of waste to be handled.RESPONSE Inputs to VRS for two (2)unit operation are given below.FSAR Table 11.4.1-1 will be revised in a future amendment to reflect this information.

3~What is the quantity of effluent releases by radionuclid f liquids?e or gases an d RESPONSE The effluent releases from the VR System are: (1)a gas stream that is discharged to the plant vent through a filter assembly consisting of a pre-HEPA filter, charcoal adsorber and HEPA filter connected in series;and (2)condensate which is recycled to the floor drain system. The gas is essentially a mixture of air and water vapor which leaves the system at the rate of 70 SCFM, 180'F and relative humidit l th 30%.u y ess t an The overall system DF for partic~late is 10 , while the overall, system DF for iodine is greater than 10.The particulate, DF applies.to all isotopes except iodine. Thus, the effluent release by radionuclide is the input activity divided by the DF, either particulate or iodine.4~What is the quantity of additional liquid waste to be treated by'he liquid waste processing system as a result of the operation of" the VRS?

0 I~

RESPONSE During the operation of the VRS, condensate is generated and recycled to the floor drain system. The condensate has the following nominal characteristics:

Flowrate: Approximately 1 gpm Temperature:

130'F pH: Approximately 7 Dissolved Solids Concentration:

Less than 200 PPM Suspended Solids Concentration:

Nil Organics: Nil k State the DF for iodine across the venturi scrubber and DF across the gas-solids separator.

What is the residence time across the charcoal adsorber? What is the thickness of the charcoal adsorber?RESPONSE The DF across the venturi scrubber for elemental iodine is about 10.The DF for iodine across the gas-solids separator is 1.However, about 1/2.of the iodine is recovered in the fluid bed dryer with the solid product. Thus, the combined DF for iodine between the dryer and the gas-solids separator is about 2.The residence time across the charcoal charcoal adsorber unit has the overall 11-1/2" thick with internal dividers.Appliance Sure-Sorber Charcoal Filter, charcoal identified as MSA i/85851 adsorber is 0.88 seconds. The dimensions of 24" x 24" x The unit is a Mine Safety Model Number 457238, with Description of the VR system process.RESPONSE The SHNPP VR system is identical to the VR system described in Topical Report No.AECC-, l-A, 1975, with exceptions as noted in Table 3.What is the VR factor achieved on the wastes processed by the VRS?RESPONSE The total VR factor is directly dependent upon the type of input wastes.Using information supplied in Response 1 the VR factor achieved will be approximately eight (8).

TABLE 3 The Difference Between the Topical Report AECC-l-A,'975 and SHNPP Deliverable Equipment Item Differences Reason Fluid Bed Dryer Dryer increases from 24 to 30 inches. The unit was scaled up to a11ow higher evaporator bottoms processing rate.Scrubber/Condenser a.Units have been separated.

Provides a cleaner condensate for recycle back to the floor drain system (200 ppm solids as compared to 10,000 ppm solids).b.Scrubber utilizes evaporator bottoms as scrubbing liquid. As described in the updated Topical Report, dated October, 1979, the reasons are: (1)Captures all the fines from the gas fluid separator in the scrubbing liquid which is the feed to the fluid bed dryer. In this way, all the incoming wastes are processed by the system and almost none are returned back to the plant.Overall, process efficiency based on feed input to waste return to the floor drain system is 99.86%worst case.(2)The scrubber is designed to automatically control the solids content of the scrubber liquid to 28%solids which is fed to the fluid bed dryer as long as the evaporator bottoms concentration is greater than 7%Critical controls of the evaporator are no longer necessary and the opera-tion of the fluid bed dryer is no longer dependent on the evaporator feed concentration allowing a more trouble free performance with'less operator dependance.

(3)If evaporator bottoms are approximately 7%, the feed rate to the scrubber can be as high as 80 gph, as compared in 20 gph, using the original system. This four-fold increase in processing rate at low evaporator bottoms con-centration is possible by recovering most of the waste heat from the fluid bed dryer.

TABLE 3 (CONT'D)Item Difference Reason Product Storage Deleted Hopper Presently product storage is accomplished in the drum.CP&L is currently reviewing,a proposal from SECO and AECC to incorporate a SECO pneumatic system which will handle product storage.Liquid/Heat Exchanger for Condenser Replaced by Condenser Tubes Allows more efficient use of cooling water since it eliminates the loss of pressure by two-fold indirect heat exchange.Charcoal Adsorber Replaced by nuclear grade commercial (AECC design)unit (NSA design).Improve reliability, utilizing standard existing equipment.

Additional HEPA Added to fluidizing air for fluid filter (F2 ANB)bed dryer.Prevents buildup of dust in wind box and distributor plate of fluid bed dryer.Reduces potential problems with dust buildup and reduces decontamination requirements.
