This letter acknowledges receipt of Carolina Power & L!ght Company's (CP&L's) January 12, l

1999, withdrawal of its request for exemption, dated August 31,1998, from 10 CFR 70.24 requirements for a criticality monitoring system in areas of the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, i

other than the new fuel storage vault, where special nuclear material is handled, used, or stored.

As a result of NRC's promulgation of amendments, noticed in the Federa/ Registeron l

November 12,1998 (63 FR 63127), to 10 CFR 50.68 and 10 CFR 70.24, CP&L determined that the exemption is no longer necessary. The amended regulations provide licensees greater flexibility in meeting criticality accident requirements.
