Enclosed is Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation's response to the staff's request for additional information on ATWS review related to Alternate Rod Injection (ARI) and Recirculation Pump Trip (RPT) systems. This information has been provided informally through telephone discussions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff which are documented in this letter. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission questions are contained in Attachment l.
We are providing marked-up copies of the drawings the staff requested since .
all design changes that are documented in Document Change Requests (DCRs) have not yet been incorporated in the drawings identified in Attachment 1. These marked-up drawings also incorporate our recent commitment to delete the three-second time delay in the Recirculation Pump Trip high pressure initiation logic.
Very truly yours, NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION C. D. Terry Vice President Nuclear Engineering and Licensing LW/pns 5126G Enclosures xc: Regional Administrator, Region I Mr. R. A. B. Thomas DISTRICT TO T. N. Roman DATE September 3, 1986 FILEGQDE SUBJECT RPSMG Set Vol tage Protec t ion Technical Specification 4.6.12b requires that the Reactor Protection System Motor Generator Set voltage protective instruments be set at: over voltage < 132, < 4 seconds under voltage > 108, 4 seconds This setting was selected to ensure that the voltage variation at the RPS components would be held to + 10 percent of 115 volts. I In addition, Niagara Mohawk committed to identify which circuits required modifications to ensure that the GE recommended normal operating voltage of 115 + 2 volts at the RPS components be maintained. (Ref. T. E. Lempges letter to D. B. Vassallo, dated 12/15/83). Licensing does not consider exceeding the recqmmended voltage of 115 + 2 volts to be a reportable event as long as the technical specification requirements and the 115 + 10'/. voltage commitment are met. He should, however, continue to pursue modifications to the RPS circuitry to achieve the GE recommended levels of 115 + 2 volts as soon as possible. - 1) R25 and R90 The single conductor resistance at 25 0 C and 90 0 C respectively.
Dou~le the values for total resistance.
- 2) AC-DC Ratio - The ratio of the resistance at 60 Hz to the DC resistance.
The factor includes correction for both skin and proximity effect. It is correct for cable in air or non-magnetic duct.
- 3) L - The inductance in millihenries per thousand feet for one conductor.
Double the values for total inductance.
- 4) X The. inductive reactance in ohms per thousand feet at 60 Hz for one conductor. ~o b~e the values for total reactance.

Dear Mr. Skow:
r I
In response to your questions on my letter dated April 12, 1978 to Mr. Whitford in reference to resistance and inductance for values of conductor resistance (at 25 C and 90 C), AC-DC resistance ratio (60Hz), inductance and inductive reactance (60Hz) for Firewall III cables in air or non-magnetic conduit. The values for inductance
@ apply to either 2 conductor jacketed cable, or duplexed conductors.
For close random lay in a tray or conduit (two separate conductors),
the values for inductance and inductive reactance should be increased by 208. (Resistance and AC-DC ratio will remain the same). The values for column "A" walls will be slightly higher for cabled or duplexed constructions, but will be about the same for random lay (plus 20%) .
If you have any questions, please contact me.
I Very truly yours, THE ROCKBESTOS COMPANY ill3. ~cM~c-Patterson Distrr Sales Manager WJP/lmr Encl.

Doyle the values for total resistance.
- 2) AC-DC Ratio - The ratio 'of the resistance at 60 Hz to the DC resistance.
The factor includes correction for both skin and proximity effect. It is correct for .cable in air or non-magnetic duct.
- 3) L The inductance in millihenries per thousand feet for one conductor.
Double the values for total inductance.
- 4) X L
- The inductive reactance in ohms per thousand feet at 60 Hz for one conductor: QoOlge the values for total reactance.
