Jeffrey B. Archie Vice President, Nuclear Operations 803 4A5 A24A A SCANA COMPANY July 29, 2005 Document Control Desk U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Sir or Madam:
Subject:
VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION DOCKET NO. 50/395 OPERATING LICENSE NO. NPF-12 SPECIAL REPORT (SPR) 2005-003 South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) is submitting this report pursuant to the requirements of Technical Specification 3.3.3.10.a. The Loose-Part Detection System channel number 751 (Reactor Vessel Head) has been inoperable in excess of 30 days.
The channel, which monitors reactor vessel intemals, was declared inoperable June 25, 2005 due to excessive noise and unreliable indications. Maintenance personnel were unable to repair the channel since the failure appears to be either the pre-amplifier or accelerometer that is located on the reactor vessel head. Repairs will be completed during the next refueling outage (RF-1 6), which is scheduled for the fall of 2006.
Should you have any questions, please call Mr. Ron Clary at (803) 345-4757 at your convenience.
