No: II-16-027 April 28, 2016 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Meeting to Discuss Performance at Honeywell Metropolis Facility The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a public meeting on Thursday, May 5, to discuss the results of its regulatory safety performance review of the Honeywell uranium conversion plant in Metropolis, Ill.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Metropolis Community Center, 900 West 10th Street in Metropolis. The meeting is open to the public and the media, and NRC officials will be available after the formal presentation to answer questions.

The NRC staff assessed performance of the Honeywell facility during the assessment period beginning Jan. 1, 2014 and ending Dec. 31, 2015, in safety operations, radiological controls, facility support and other areas. The NRC staff review determined that the company continued to conduct its activities safely and securely, protecting public health and the environment.

The review found that none of the program areas needed improvement, which means the NRC will continue its normal inspection program for such facilities. NRC inspectors did conduct two inspections in response to events at the facility in October 2014 and August 2015, but determined that the company took appropriate actions to address the causes of those events.

The NRC inspects Honeywell and other nuclear fuel facilities to monitor their safety performance and verify that they are meeting NRC regulations, said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney. We post our inspection reports online and we also hold regular meetings near the facilities to discuss our oversight and answer questions from members of the public.

A copy of the NRC letter to the company regarding the performance review is publicly available on the NRC website.
